fuel pump

I have a nissan quest '96,,, the fuel pump sometimes work ( when I hit the fuel tank with my hands) and sometimes doesn't work. I need to know what's wrong with it....... do I have to replace it or fix it .? Also , how do I really know if it is the fuelpump that is not good?
